Hello Everyone

Well its that time of year again!!!!

Less than a month to go to the start of a new fly fishing season!! I myself just can not wait!! Its been a busy old winter making a few new fly pattens and restocking the box's with the old classic's that just seem to work and can't do with out!!

Now is the time to check you gear make sure it all in order, reels greased, line's clean and go over every little thing in your vest or bag, write down a list of things you need and missing so when you go into the sports shop to buy your fishing licence you can get what's required  and be all ready for October 1.

Also now's a good time to get out into the paddock and get the casting arm up and ready for action

Tight Lines, Michael

P.S New Zealand's a little crazy at the moment with the rugby world cup about to kick off in a few days but I'm sure it wont hamper the start to our fly fishing season

Hello Everyone

Well the first 3 weeks of the new season are now behind us I can tell you its been a good start to the season, with my main river (Mataura) at this time of the year fishing very well over the fist two weeks, with the aid of some very good weather has allowed the Mataura to drop and warm a little in turn bringing on some good afternoon hatches allowing for some trout to take advantage of this and start feeding from the surface.

But like all good things it has unfortunately come to an end, rain in the last 7 days has brought every thing up dirty if not in flood leaving us to hit the small streams and creeks to get our fly fishing fix

The good thing is these smaller waters are fishing good also with a good number and sized fish brought to the bank. lighter tippets and longer leaders are needed for success in these circumstances and has been a good warm up for later in the season when this seems to be the only way to get success on low warm waters so till next time

Tight lines Michael

28 November 2011

Hello Everyone

Well the November is almost behind us its been a strange one with some poor weather involving lots of rain, strong winds, some snow and the odd fine day as well! although fishing hasn't been the easiest at times I have seen some good fish have been caught over many different rivers.

Because of the nasty weather iv had to pull out a few stops to get some fishing in, so i can tell you the following waterways have been fishing fairly good when we've been able to get at them,
Fish have been sitting deep on the Mararoa Upukerora Eglintion Waikaia Oreti Whitestone and Mataura (when fishable) so some heavy nymphs were needed to get results. Some fish have been in excellent condition and others not so well but thats all depending on which system your fishing

Some small streams such as the Otamita Waimea Gow & Argyle burn pulse Waikaka have seen some good dry fly action mid after noon to keep the dry fly fishermen happy with a caddis hatch or two with the odd few mayfly's chucked in the mix

Almost all river are now open for fishing with the exception of the odd few in the back country of Canterbury

so till next time tight lines Michael
