Hello Everyone

Well things are hotting up down here!! Fish galore!!

The Mataura had been experiencing some impressive mayfly hatch's in resent weeks and some mighty fine spinner fall's to go with it!!

Also the back country rivers are stoked full of fish just ready for the picking's, with so much good fishing around me at the moment it's hard to get off the river's and come make a report! So it's a short one this time and back to the fishing for me!!

So if your not here you are missing out on some fine fishing!!

Hello Everyone

Welcome to a new fly fishing season in the deep south of New Zealand!  Just over two weeks into the new season and the fishing has been excellent so far! The Mataura has been up and down like a yo-yo and has been favouring the spin or bait fishermen and it hasn't been as to kind to us fly fishermen with only small numbers being caught!

However it tributarys have been excellent for us fly fishermen and I have seen some dry fly action. It has been good early on, to flick a dry to some trout instead of blind fishing with a nymph all day. Hopefully the patch of bad weather will pass soon and the fishing will really start to hot up!!

Hello Everyone,

Spring is all but here in the deep south and that can only mean one thing! the start of a new fly fishing season!! So far winter fly fishing, over the last 3 months has been extremely good with a very large number of trout (mostly rainbows) brought to the bank and as usual a larger number lost. I've spent a good amount of time on the Clutha chasing these fish as there trying to fill up there bellies with food before heading up stream to spawn.

With the whitebait running in tidal waters, now is a good time to get the grey ghost streamers out and and chase a few sea-run browns which are gathering numbers on the lower reaches of most Southland rivers. They are hungry for almost any thing that's moving in an attempt to put on weight after a (hopefully) successfully spawning season.

Apart from a few good dumping of rain in late April and May we haven't had too much rain in Gore or the head waters of the Mataura which has kept the Mataura and many of it tributaries in good order without many floods, so if things stay like this for the next 4-5 weeks we should have a very good start in opening weeks of the new session starting on the 1st October.

Till next time tight lines, Michael
