About Your Guide

Michael, fly fishing guideI was born and raised in Gore, the "Brown Trout Capital of the World" in the south of the South Island of New Zealand. It seems I was destined to be a great fisherman as most of the fishing knowledge I have has been passed down through the generations, with both my father and grandfather both very experienced fishermen.

I received my first fishing rod for Christmas when I was just 8 and ever since my first fishing trip to a secret spot on the famous Mataura river I've been "hooked"!

It wasn't long after that I picked up my first fly rod which began my career as a fly fisherman. By the time I had turned 13 and with the help of my grandfather, I was learning to tie my own flies and my understanding of fly fishing began to grow.

I have been a member of the Mataura Angling club since I first began fishing and have spent many hours fishing the local rivers within 3 hours travel of my home. Being a member of a fishing club has got me out on the rivers in all sorts of weather and river conditions, chasing the elusive trout.

Over the years my knowledge has grown considerably and I now have the intimate understanding of my "back yard" that few others can offer.

With many trips into the Fiordland basin over the years I have fallen in love with this unique area and now offer my fly fishing experience and knowledge of this exclusive piece of paradise!
